Margot Robbie, in an exclusive interview for the cover story of Vogue’s summer issue, discusses the difficulties encountered during production of the eagerly awaited “Barbie” film. In her role as the film’s leading woman, Robbie illuminates the challenges that her production company, LuckyChap, surmounted in order to initiate the much-debated undertaking.

Robbie expressed her notable contribution in persuading the esteemed Greta Gerwig, in collaboration with her co-director Noah Baumbach, to assume responsibility for the film’s writing and direction. Robbie articulated the importance of paying homage to the Barbie brand’s sixtieth-year heritage, all the while recognizing the divisive opinions that have surrounded the iconic doll.

“We, of course, would want to honor the 60-year legacy that this brand has, but we have to acknowledge that there are a lot of people who aren’t fans of Barbie,” explained Robbie. “On top of that, they’re not just not interested in Barbie.” They actively dislike Barbie. And Barbie is giving us a lot of trouble. “We need to come up with a way to recognize that.”

The “Barbie” film casts Ryan Gosling in the role of Barbie’s iconic lover, Ken. During the interview, Gosling disclosed that his co-star, Robbie, assisted him in assuming the role of the character in a novel and touching manner.

She brought Ken a pink gift from Barbie every day while we were shooting. The gift was wrapped in a pink bow. Gosling said, “Everyone liked being at the beach.” “Examples include puka shells or a sign reading ‘Pray for surf.'” Ken’s job is to work on the shore. I’ve never really thought about what that means. On the other hand, I got the sense that she was trying to make Ken feel better by giving him gifts.

Robbie also sought support in the process of accepting her inner Barbie. The director, Greta Gerwig, suggested that Robbie listen to the podcast “This American Life” in order to develop her character.

“I was like, ‘Greta, I need to go on this whole character journey,’” according to Robbie. “Greta responded, ‘Oh, I have an outstanding podcast for you. You are aware that you constantly hear a voice in your mind. ‘ This woman is not experiencing that voice within her mind.'”

Fans can expect a new take on the iconic Barbie character in the film as its July 21 theatrical release approaches. Robbie and Gosling’s performances contribute nuance and complexity to the beloved figurines.

As they confront the complexities of reconciling legacy and criticism, Robbie and the production staff of “Barbie” endeavor to produce a movie that deeply affects viewers, thereby contributing to the franchise’s lasting cultural importance.
