SAG-AFTRA released the nominations for the 2024 Screen Actors Guild Awards, which was much-anticipated news. This sets the stage for an exciting awards season. During a live stream on Instagram on Wednesday, Issa Rae and Kumail Nanjiani showed off the contenders. “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer” came out on top with four nods each. The movies “American Fiction” and “Killers of the Flower Moon” also did well, getting three nominations each. “The Color Purple,” “The Holdovers,” “Maestro,” “Nyad,” and “Poor Things” all got two nods.

On TV, HBO’s hit show “Succession” dominated the nominees, picking up five, including the coveted Best Ensemble in a Drama Series award. The next three movies, “The Bear,” “The Last of Us,” and “Ted Lasso,” all got four nods. “Barry,” “Beef,” and “The Morning Show” were also nominated three times each, and “Abbott Elementary,” “The Crown,” and “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” were nominated twice each.

The 30th SAG Awards will be held on February 24 at the Shrine Auditorium & Expo Hall in Los Angeles. The show will be streamed live on Netflix at 8 p.m. EST.

Who Made Waves and Who Missed Out?

Penélope Cruz’s Triumph Amidst Snubs

Even though movies like “Past Lives” and “May December” got good reviews, they didn’t get any SAG award nods. But Penélope Cruz, winner of an Academy Award, stood out. She got a lot of praise for her supporting part in Michael Mann’s “Ferrari.” Even though the movie didn’t get a lot of attention during award season, Cruz’s great performance won her a spot on the list of nominees.

Todd Haynes’s “May December” Left in the Cold

Since its opening at the Cannes Film Festival, “May December” by Todd Haynes has been a critical favorite. Because of his outstanding performance, Charles Melton was a clear favorite for the supporting actor award, even though Natalie Portman and Julianne Moore were also in the running. But the movie wasn’t nominated for any SAG awards, which makes fans and people in the business confused about its chances of winning an Oscar.

Leonardo DiCaprio in the Best Actor Race

An unexpected turn of events was that Leonardo DiCaprio’s name wasn’t in the running for Best Actor for his role in “Killers of the Flower Moon.” People are always surprised that Leonardo DiCaprio wasn’t nominated, especially since co-stars Lily Gladstone and Robert De Niro were. However, the snub leaves the door open for an Oscar nod, which keeps fans on the edge of their seats.

A24’s “Past Lives” and More

The Screen Actors Guild has traditionally praised diverse group casts, but this year, A24’s “Past Lives” didn’t get a group nomination, which was a change. Fans were also disappointed that the A24 versions of “The Iron Claw,” “Priscilla,” and “The Zone of Interest” didn’t get much attention.

As extras, “Poor Things” and “Air” didn’t get nominated for an ensemble award, Jeremy Strong wasn’t nominated for Best Actor for “Succession” like Brian Cox was, and Annette Bening did get nominated for Best Actress, which added to the surprise.

As people get more excited for the 30th annual SAG Awards, these choices have set the stage for an exciting and unpredictable awards season.
