L.A. — Bill Hayes, the famous star of the long-running American daytime soap show “Days of Our Lives,” has died. He was 98 years old. Fans have a hole in their hearts since his death on December 27, 2023. They have followed his amazing work for over 50 years.
He was born in Harvey, Illinois, in 1925, and his acting career started in the theater before he made a big name for himself on TV. He first appeared on TV in the 1950s and later became famous on the comedy show “Your Show of Shows.” Hayes’ song “The Ballad of Davy Crockett” went to No. 1 on the charts in 1955. He then had a popular nightclub act with Florence Henderson, who played Kim Brady on “The Brady Bunch.”
But it was his part as Doug Williams on “Days of Our Lives,” which he started in 1970, that won him a huge number of fans. In 1974, Hayes married his co-star Susan Seaforth Hayes. This was two years before their characters on the show also got married. In April 2018, the couple won a career achievement award at the Daytime Emmys.
The character played by Hayes, Doug Williams, was liked by many on the soap opera because he was kind and gentle. He played the part for more than 50 years, becoming a regular on the show. In 1975 and 1976, he was nominated for a Daytime Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series.
“Bill Hayes was a true legend of daytime television,” said Ken Corday, executive producer of the show. He was a wonderful actor, a great friend, and a much-loved “Days of Our Lives” family member. We’ll miss him very much.”
Hayes’s wife Susan and his children will miss him. Fans and friends are very sad about his death and have taken to social media to share their memories of the actor and the famous role he played.
One fan wrote on Twitter, “Bill Hayes was a treasure.” He was a nice person and a great actor. We will miss him. This fan said, “Doug Williams was my favorite character on ‘Days of Our Lives.'” He was always nice and good. I’m shocked that he’s gone.
Hayes was a very religious Catholic who also made contributions to the world of soap shows. His first wife was Mary Beth Evans, and they were married from 1954 to 1974. From 1974 to his death, he was married to Susan Seaforth Hayes.
